Mission and Ministry

There is no better way to exemplify Jesus’ command to love God and neighbor than through service to others. In order to engage people in the outward expression of God’s love, we must meet them where they are. We must understand their experiences of pain and sorrow, of hurt and misery, of fear and doubt. Without that understanding, how can we provide them meaningful service? Without offering a helping hand, how can we show them God’s grace, love and mercy?
At Drayton Presbyterian, mission is our faithful service unto others on God’s behalf, reaching out to people in God’s world. Here are some of our current mission activities:
Warming Center: In collaboration with other local churches, agencies and our Cana Lutheran partner, members of Drayton Presbyterian volunteers assist in providing services and meals for homeless individuals on cold winter nights.
Lenten Mission: During the season of Lent our church has, for many years, supported FernCare, a non-profit, self-funded, free clinic that provides no-cost medical care to the medically uninsured. From diapers to bandages, from toothbrushes to stamps, our congregation has over donated over 1,000 individual items to FernCare.
Berkley/Royal Oak CROP Hunger Walk: In collaboration with the CROP Hunger Walks organization and many local churches and individuals, Drayton Presbyterian volunteers raise funds and walk in support of the CROP Hunger Walk mission – to bring people together around the world to address their own development needs and to support hunger-fighting programs in our own community.
Drayton Presbyterian Sewing Group: For over 3 decades, the members of this group have produced handmade adult and child-sized quilts, lap robes and infant blankets. These pieces of work are then donated to the Detroit Presbytery’s “Women in Service” project. The value of the items donated by our Sewing Group over the years is over $100,000.
Rise Against Hunger Together: With the Rise Against Hunger organization and our partners at Greenfield Presbyterian and Cana Lutheran, Drayton Presbyterian volunteers pool resources to buy the food and provide an afternoon of labor. The result – the whole group together packages approximately 15,000 nutritious meals for people in need around the world.
South Oakland Shelter: With the South Oakland Shelter organization and our Cana Lutheran partner, Drayton Presbyterian volunteers assist in housing up to 35 homeless guests in the church building for a week, providing a clean, safe place to relax and sleep along with hot breakfast, a packed lunch and a home-cooked evening meal each day.
